NEW TO HOCKEY

First time on the ice? Start here.

If you’re brand new to the game — whether a child or an adult — it can feel overwhelming.

Skates, sticks, helmets, pads… where do you even begin?

We’re here to simplify it.

At Centre Ice, we help players and families get it right the first time — focusing on safety, comfort, and confidence without overspending on gear you don’t need yet.

These are starting points — our fit specialists are here to help.

What Do You Actually Need?

Here’s a simple beginner checklist for ice hockey:

✔ Helmet (with cage or full face protection)

✔ Shoulder pads

✔ Elbow pads

✔ Gloves

✔ Hockey pants

✔ Shin guards

✔ Protective cup / jill

✔ Hockey skates

✔ Stick

✔ Hockey socks & jersey

✔ Neck guard (required for any player Under 18)

If you're joining a Kiwi Hockey School programme, check with your association — some may provide jerseys or certain items.

Entry-Level Gear Guidance

When you’re new, the goal is: Comfort. Protection. Proper fit.

You do not need elite-level or top-tier equipment at this stage.

What to Look For:

Skates

  • Comfortable fit with good ankle support
  • No major pressure points
  • Snug heel lock
  • Room for toes to lightly brush the front

Helmet

  • Firm, secure fit
  • No movement when you shake your head
  • Properly adjusted chin strap

Protective Gear

  • Should sit securely without sliding
  • Full coverage without restricting movement
  • Lightweight and flexible for learning mobility

We’ll guide you to beginner-appropriate models designed specifically for new players.

Key Fit Priorities for First-Time Players

Fit matters more than brand at this stage.

Skates

Poorly fitted skates can:

  • Cause discomfort
  • Reduce balance
  • Slow skill development

A proper fit helps players feel stable and confident early on.

If you’re unsure about sizing — especially for children — we strongly recommend in-store fitting.

Helmet

Helmet fit is about safety first.

It should:

  • Sit level on the head
  • Not tilt forward or backward
  • Not move independently from your head

Never size up “to grow into” a helmet.

Protective Gear

Protection should:

  • Stay in place while moving
  • Cover joints fully
  • Allow full range of motion

Loose gear reduces protection and confidence.

Common Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

Buying elite gear too early, Choosing skates based on price alone, Buying oversized helmets to “last longer", Ignoring fit differences between brands, Assuming online sizing charts replace expert advice

Starting with the right foundation prevents frustration and unnecessary upgrades later.

Budget & Growth Considerations

For growing players, balance is key. You don’t need the most advanced gear, but it’s important to have proper protection, the right fit, and room for safe development. We can help you choose equipment that makes sense for first-season players, those going through rapid growth stages, or anyone transitioning from learn-to-play programmes. If you’re unsure how much to invest at this stage, just ask—we’ll provide honest guidance to make sure you get the right gear without overspending.
